LEARNING IN THE LOWER SCHOOL

At Forest City International School (FCIS), we ensure that our lower school students develop strong literacy and numeracy foundations while nurturing their passions across a wide range of subjects—from science and the arts to engineering and athletics. Our Lower School program is designed to give students a well-rounded education through integrated learning experiences that reflect real-world applications.

A Day in the Lower School

Each day begins with Morning Meeting, where students set learning goals, share news, and develop social and study skills with their homeroom teacher. Our structured start to the day promotes both academic success and emotional growth, supported by the Second Step social-emotional learning curriculum. Through this, students build empathy, manage emotions, and develop positive relationships.

Literacy Program

At FCIS, our literacy curriculum is aligned with AERO Standards and based on the Science of Reading research, ensuring a solid foundation for all learners. We use the Wonders Program, which offers a range of resources tailored to meet diverse learning needs. As students move from learning to read to reading to learn, they explore various literary genres and develop key literacy skills such as word study, communication, and presentation. With English as the language of instruction, students have numerous opportunities to strengthen their reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities. Our well-stocked library, featuring age-appropriate books, e-books, magazines, and online resources, further supports their literary growth throughout the program.

English as an Additional Language

For students whose first language is not English, FCIS provides tailored English as an Additional Language (EAL) support. Depending on their needs, students may receive small group instruction or in-class support from EAL specialists, allowing them to progress rapidly in both social and academic English skills.

Other World Languages

We are committed to fostering multilingualism and cultural awareness through a comprehensive language program. Students have the opportunity to study Mandarin, with engaging lessons designed to build proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking. For our Malay students, we provide Malay language and cultural studies, helping them stay connected to their heritage. Starting in Grade 5, students can also choose to study Spanish, further broadening their linguistic abilities and preparing them for success in an increasingly globalized world.

Mathematics

The numeracy program in the Lower School follows an American curriculum that focuses on building a strong foundation in key areas like number operations, algebraic thinking, geometry, measurement, and data interpretation. Aligned with AERO standards, the program uses interactive lessons with manipulatives, technology, and real-life applications to make math both engaging and meaningful. Personalized instruction ensures students are supported and challenged at their own pace, with an emphasis on mastery of concepts and fluency in calculations. Through hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks, students develop critical thinking skills, while interdisciplinary projects allow them to apply their math knowledge across subjects and in everyday situations.

Science amd Social Studies

In our science and social studies programs, we emphasize student-centered learning through interactive activities that promote critical thinking and real-world application. Guided by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and AERO Social Studies Standards, students engage in interdisciplinary units using Wonders literacy, Mystery Science, FOSS Science kits, and other rich resources.

In science, students develop an understanding of key scientific concepts and principles while enhancing their capacity for scientific thinking and problem-solving. They explore life, physical, earth, and space sciences, applying their knowledge to identify and address real-world challenges. The engineering design cycle is integrated into this problem-solving approach.

In social studies, students are prepared to become responsible global citizens. They inquire into relevant global issues and engage in projects that foster an appreciation for the learning process. This approach helps students construct knowledge and apply their understanding both in school and in their broader communities.

Additionally, students in Grades 5 and 6 participate in a weekly stand-alone STEM class. These semester-long courses allow students to choose between Engineering, Forensic Science, or Life Science, further enhancing their interdisciplinary learning experience.

Physical Education

Weekly swimming lessons and Physical Education (PE), plus Sports Days and Swim Gala are the hallmarks of our robust physical education program. In addition to in-class lessons, our PE department offers many sports themed extra-curricular activities (ECAs) and after school clubs that allow students to further explore activities that interest them. All swimming and PE lessons are led by qualified PE and swimming instructors, ensuring the safety of participating students.

Music

The Lower school music program offers a vibrant and engaging Kodaly-inspired curriculum, where students learn music through singing, movement, and interactive games. Rooted in the belief that music literacy starts with the voice, students explore melody, rhythm, and harmony in a fun and accessible way. As they progress, they are introduced to a variety of musical instruments, including the recorder, xylophones, ukulele, and piano, building both individual skills and ensemble experience. The Program culminates in an annual showcase, where students shine as they perform for the school community, demonstrating their growth as confident, young musicians.

Visual Arts

Our art program fosters creativity and encourages students to explore their unique perspectives through various mediums. By engaging in hands-on projects, students improve hand-eye coordination, enhance concentration, and learn to express themselves in meaningful ways. The program also promotes risk-taking, as students are encouraged to experiment with new techniques and ideas without fear of failure. Ultimately, the skills gained in art extend beyond the classroom, supporting personal growth and problem-solving abilities.

Experiential and Service Learning

At FCIS, we believe that education extends beyond the classroom. Our Experiential Learning program in the Lower School allows students to take their learning into the real world through hands-on experiences and day trips that enrich classroom lessons. By actively engaging in these activities and reflecting on their experiences, students gain a deeper understanding of the world around them.

In addition, students participate in community service projects that teach the importance of giving back. Some of these projects take place in school, while others involve going out into the community. Whether planting gardens, entertaining seniors, or helping clean local beaches, our students learn that contributing to their community is a rewarding experience—and that giving time can be even more valuable than giving money

Innovation and Passion: Genius Hour

Beginning in Grade 5, students participate in Genius Hour, a weekly opportunity to pursue their personal passions through self-driven projects. This innovative program fosters creativity, risk-taking, and problem-solving while encouraging students to explore areas of interest beyond the traditional curriculum. Genius Hour empowers students to think boldly and develop skills in collaboration and critical thinking.

Leadership Development

We are committed to cultivating future leaders. Leadership development begins early, with opportunities for students to take on roles such as participating in the Elementary Leadership Team. Through various leadership programs and initiatives, students actively develop and refine their leadership skills, preparing them to excel in a variety of fields as they grow and continue their educational journey.

Digital Technology

Today, people have access to gigabytes of information on their smartphones and computers. In Lower School, we harness the power of technology through our 1-to-1 tablet program, where every student has access to a personal tablet for daily learning. Guided by teachers and educational technology coaches, students use their tablets to personalize their learning experience. Our campus is fully equipped with wireless communication and robust bandwidth, allowing access to a wide range of apps and online resources.

Student Assessment

Regular and ongoing assessment is paramount in improving instruction and learning. At FCIS, teachers use a variety of formative and summative assessments to drive their classroom instruction. Formative assessments are used on a daily basis to check student understanding of the concepts being taught in the classroom. These assessments include targeted questioning during the lesson, student discussion, quizzes, and exit tickets. When students show that they have grasped a concept, teachers are able to move on to additional concepts and skills. When a student does not show evidence of understanding, teachers are able to quickly identify the need for reteaching the concept using different methods. Likewise, if formative assessments show that students possess knowledge of concepts above the expected grade level, then teachers are able to identify these students and provide enrichment opportunities to support their learning needs as well.

At the end of each unit, teachers will conduct summative assessments for a final evaluation of the students’ understanding of all of the concepts and skills taught throughout the unit. Assessment techniques and tools include tests, exams, research papers, essays, presentations, speeches, group projects, and performances. In addition to report cards, parents will have access to digital portfolios.

Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs)

Our Extra-Curricular Activities (ECAs) program is designed to complement and enhance the learning experience. In collaboration with the wider FCIS campus, the Lower School offers a diverse array of after-school and weekend activities that cater to a variety of interests and talents. From sports and arts to science clubs and cultural activities, our ECAs provide students with opportunities to explore their passions, develop new skills, and engage with their peers in a fun and enriching environment outside the classroom. These programs play a key role in fostering well-rounded individuals who are eager to discover and pursue their interests.
