EAL English As An Additional Language

EAL

At FCIS, English as an Additional Language (EAL) is not seperate from the curriculum. It is how we help multilingual learners access the same rigorous standards as their peers.

Types of Support

Push-In Session

In class assistance for integrated learning.

Sheltered Instruction

Specialized English support in academic subjects.

Pull-Out Session

Targeted instruction by a specialist in a dedicated EAL classroom.

EAL Levels / Tiers

iEAL supports beginning English speakers through intensive, targeted instruction in foundational English in a small group setting. This class is held in lieu of the grade level English literacy block and consists of full English pull-out support.

aEAL supports students who have foundational English proficiency and are developing the academic language needed to access grade-level learning. Students learn primarily in the mainstream classroom with targeted push-in and small-group EAL support.

EAL supports students who can successfully access grade-level instruction but continue to develop and refine their academic English. Support is provided within the mainstream classroom as students progress toward full English proficiency.

EAL Standards

The EAL Program uses WIDA as the primary framework to gauge student proficiency, CAT4 and MAP assessments serve as complementary tools, providing additional insights to determine the appropriate level of support for entry and exit from the program.

  • Students entering with low English receive personalized support:

    • – Small-group classes to focus on individual needs.
    • – Integration with mainstream classes for core subjects (with EAL teacher support) to build confidence.
  • – Literacy: Reading fluency, vocabulary development, writing structure (sentences → paragraphs → essays).
  •
  • – Academic Language: Subject-specific terminology (e.g., STEM, humanities) to access curriculum and participate in class.
  • EAL students gradually transition to full mainstream participation:

    • – EAL teachers collaborate with subject teachers to adapt materials.
    • – Peer mentorship from native English speakers to practice language in casual settings.
  • Specialized support for academic language in STEM and math:

    • – Terminology workshops (e.g., scientific method, mathematical reasoning).
    • – Visual aids and hands-on activities to reinforce language learning.

Each student has a personalized transition plan, with regular assessments to track progress. By G12, EAL students achieve English proficiency and are fully prepared to meet graduation requirements and thrive in university.
