WHY 4 AND 5
AP courses are university-level courses taught in high school and examined by the College Board. Scores run from 1 to 5.
The College Board defines 4 as “well qualified” and 5 as “extremely well qualified”. These are the scores that selective universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Hong Kong and Singapore look for when they consider AP results for admission, credit or advanced standing.
For a family weighing an American-curriculum school, the share of exams at 4 or above is one of the few outcomes that can be compared directly — subject by subject, year by year.

Every exam sat by an FCIS student is included. There is no entry threshold for AP courses and no filtering of who may sit the exam.
OUR APPROACH TO AP
Many schools admit only their strongest students to AP courses. FCIS does not. Any Upper School student who wants to take an AP course may take it — and every exam they sit is in the numbers above.
There is no test to get into an AP class at FCIS and no minimum grade to sit the exam. Students choose AP courses with their teachers and the College Counselling Office, not through a screening process.
We would rather a student attempt Calculus BC or Physics C and find out what they are capable of than play it safe. Teachers actively encourage students to take on the course that challenges them, and support them through it.
AP is not reserved for a top set. Every student — whatever their starting point, first language or year of arrival — has the same access to the full AP list and the same preparation before they sit.
AP subjects on offer across the sciences, mathematics, economics, humanities, languages and the arts — so that every student can find the courses where they will be stretched, and where they will do their best work.
TWO YEARS IN FOCUS
In our strongest year, 31 of 35 exams scored 4 or 5, and 18 of them (51%) scored 5. All nine Microeconomics candidates scored 4 or 5, six of them a 5; all four Human Geography candidates scored 4 or 5; and every candidate in Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chinese Language and Culture and Comparative Government and Politics scored 5.
By 2024 the programme had more than doubled to 77 exams in 21 subjects. Fifty-four scored 4 or 5 and 35 — nearly half — scored 5, the most top scores FCIS has recorded in one year. Seven of eight Calculus BC candidates scored 5, all six Chinese Language and Culture candidates scored 4 or 5, all four Statistics candidates scored 4 or 5, and Macroeconomics produced four 5s from six exams.

The calculus-based physics course is the most demanding physics AP offers. From 2023 to 2025, every FCIS candidate who sat it scored a 5.
Ten of eleven exams scored 4 or 5, and nine scored 5. In 2024, seven of eight candidates scored 5 — the depth of a mathematics pathway that runs from Precalculus through Calculus AB to BC.
Nineteen of 20 exams scored 4 or 5, and 14 of them — 70% — scored a 5. In 2022 all three candidates scored 5; in 2024, five of six did.
Every Statistics candidate in 2024 and 2025 scored 4 or 5. Statistics is among the APs that US universities most often grant credit for.
A 5 on more than half of exams. Microeconomics, the most widely taken AP at FCIS, reached 4 or 5 on 20 of 30 exams, including all nine in 2022.
All five portfolios submitted in 2025 scored 4 or 5, and the single candidates for AP Drawing (2025) and AP Music Theory (2024) each earned a 5. AP is not only for the sciences.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
An AP score is the visible end of a longer process: choosing the right courses in Grades 9 and 10, building the reading, writing and quantitative habits that university-level work demands, and sitting the exam with a teacher who has taught that syllabus to previous cohorts.
At FCIS, students plan their AP choices with the College Counselling Office so that the subjects they take support the university pathway they are aiming for — whether that is engineering, economics, the arts or medicine. The door to every course is open; the conversation is about which challenge is the right one.
The breadth of the list matters as much as any single score. A student at FCIS can build a programme spanning Calculus BC and Physics C, Chemistry and Biology, Macro- and Microeconomics, Psychology, Human Geography, Comparative Government, English, Chinese, Statistics, Computer Science and studio art — and sit the exams where they are strongest.
